The Old Town
Be sure to go beyond the busy streets that branch off from the Esplanade,
to venture into the old town. You will see laundry strung across the alley
ways, costumed old women weaving in the doorways and may more colourful
sights.
Wandering around the old town you are likely to come across two churches
which hold the highest esteem to the Corfiots. One is the small chapel
of St. Spyridon, where lies the island's patron saint in a silver coffin.
The chapel is aglitter with hanging candelabra and emulated the sweet
smell of incense. Marvellously cool and mysterious is the Mitropolis,
the Orthodox Cathedral of Corfu. It houses the headless remains of St.
Theodora, the island's second saint who was spirited out of Constantinople
with St. Spyridon.
Nearby, there are momentos of Britain's Ionian sojourn, an old fashioned
green bandstand used for Sunday concerts; dominating the Esplanade of
the Liston, is an impressive monument to the Ionian Greek Union, surrounded
by marble reliefs displaying the symbols of the seven islands; and also
there is a statue of Corfu's greatest son loannis Kapodistrias who was
Greece's first
president (1827-1831), and after whom Corfu's airport is named.
