St. Spyridon
The Island's Patron Saint is commemorated on Palm Sunday, Easter, August
11th and the first Sunday in November. His mummified body is carried round
the town in a glass fronted palaquin which is preceded by bands and followed
by officials, dignitaries, contingents of the armed services, boy scouts,
girl guides and school children in their Sunday best. The Greeks will
struggle through the crowds in order to reach the saint body so that they
are permitted to kiss his embroidered slippers. Whilst wandering round
the Old Town, you may come across the small chapel dedicated to the Saint.
The number of Corfiots named Spiro after the Saint can lead to great
confusion. However, this can be very useful, if one were to shout "Spiro"
loudly in any restaurant, the owner, two of the waiters, five people at
near-by tables and the dozing cab driver outside would all look around.
Consequently, most have nick-names out of necessity, and should you befriend
somebody, it is helpful to know the nick-name when talking about him with
other Greeks.
