Festivals
The Greeks love a party! The links on the right give dates
of various festivals and holidays round the year.
One of my personal favourites, this festival marks the start
of Lent, and is so named as it was traditional to wash out
the kitchen utensils and store them for the fast of Lent.
The more religious Greeks don't go completely on fast, however
they do give up meat and oil for Lent.
All over Greece, cities, towns and villages put on huge carnivals
to mark this festival, with processions down the street. The
biggest Clean Monday festival is in the city of Patras and
lasts the whole weekend. The photographs below were taken
in Avliotes in 1999. Those of you who have been to Ag. Stefanos
may recognise some of the people!!
