Banks and Cash Machines
in Greece
Below is a list of the national banks of Greece. You generally
wont need this unless you are considering moving out permanently
or buying land, or if a cash machine swallows your card!
It should be mentioned that nearly all UK debit cards will
work in Greek cash machines, though what buttons should be
selected usually confuses people. After you have inserted
your card and entered your PIN, the machine will usually give
you a selection of accounts from which to withdraw money.
These are usually the following:
- Savings Account
- Current Account
- Credit Card Account
Your debit card will usually be on your current account or
perhaps your deposit account, so you will naturally want to
select one of the first two options. This is not the
case! As a foreign customer, you must select Credit Card Account
as the transaction will be presented to your bank via a credit
card handling company.
Commission rates for the machines is very similar to what
you will pay buying currency or travellers cheques before
you leave the UK, so the only real advantage to getting all
your money first is if you think the Pound is going to weaken
against the Euro while you are away. I for one tend to take
only enough currency to get through the airport and cover
any taxi fares, then go to the machine.
