Municipality of Faiakon
The
sea forms the easterly border of the Municipality of Feakes, starting
at Dafnila and running north east to Glyfa. Along the whole coastline
you will find lovely beaches, some with plenty of people and others deserted,
some sandy and others with pebbles, some with easy access and others only
reachable with a traditional fishing boat. Dassia, Ipsos and Barbati make
up the touristic zone, with superb services and European Blue Flags for
clean water, while Dafnila and Glyfa are preferred by those who seek peace
and quiet.
In Kato Korakiana in 1951 Greek tourism saw its first organized groups,
with the establishment on the Elea peninsula in Dassia of the famous Club
Mediterranee . The region's top spot is the Castello, originally a medieval
fortress, later the Villa Mimbelli (1900-1939), and then the Castello
Hotel (1957-1982). In its heyday, it hosted visits by members of high
society and other personalities. Just before you reach Dassia, the historic
Merlin Estate appears suddenly in view. Here, the botanist Sidney Merlin
was the first to cultivate the renowned variety of orange which now bears
his name, as well as that trademark of Corfu's agriculture, the Koum Kouat.
Ano Korakiana is a village with a rich cultural heritage, with many wonderful
churches with wall frescoes, traditional Corfiot houses and picturesque
narrow lanes. In Ano Korakiana's coffee bars the people retain centuries
old codes of social conduct, and the Greek coffee, accompanied by a liqueur
(koum kouat of course) has a special taste. Leaving the village and heading
towards Sokraki, you come upon the church of the miracle working Saint
Isidoros, built in the 14th century upon a rock with a marvellous view
out over the surrounding area.
Around Zigos and Sigourades, the countryside is ideal for walks along
green bordered footpaths, among wild orchids and other rare wild flowers.
Further on, Spartillas is a lovely picturesque village at the edge of
which is the Church of the Virgin Mary, dating from the 17th century.
At Ipsos, on the left side of the Town Hall, a road leads to the historic
monastery of Ai-Lias which was constructed in the 15th century on an enchanting
hill near Mesino. Surrounding the monastery are the ruins of cells and
ancient oak trees, hinting at those days of old when it was at its peak
and many devout monks, both from Corfu and from elsewhere, lived here.
When the sun goes down, a fun filled night unfolds before you at the most
in localities of the region - Ipsos, Dassia and Barbati - keeping
you on an adrenalin-high till dawn.
