Municipality of Thinalion
The
Municipality of Thinalion (in Ancient Greek, the words "para thin
alos" meant "beside the sea") is perhaps the most representative
of Corfu. Huge sandy beaches, lush vegetation, beautiful woods, waterfalls,
rivers, caves, a fabulous lagoon, all dominated by the imposing mountain
massif of Pantokrator with its ancient villages - this is the corner of
Paradise which you will come to love the most.
Life here rolls by at a slower and more relaxing pace, with swimming
in safe, calm waters, with long walks in unspoilt countryside, with visits
to historic churches and picturesque little villages, with rambles along
ancient footpaths. There is, too, the opportunity to become acquainted
with local cuisine in small tavernas, as well as more sophisticated evenings
at modern places of entertainment.
The only thing that can be said to be moving fast in the Municipality
of Thinalion is the development of luxury hotels, top quality villas,
and theme parks especially in the resort towns of Roda and Acharavi. There
are many travel agencies and other centres offering assistance to the
visitor, all with the aim of helping guests enjoy unforgettable holidays.
A uniquely well developed area, but one which is still closely linked
to its local traditions, will make you welcome with true Ancient Greek
"philoxenia", which expresses the idea of both hospitality and
love for one's guests. In this area you will meet a Corfu more beautiful,
more wonderful, than you could ever have imagined.
Acharavi has one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the north. It
is now a major resort and has extensive tourist facilities and a vibrant
night life. There is a Roman bath on the outskirts. Roda a little further
along is another popular tourist resort and it has a number of ancient
Greek and Roman sites.
