Scooter and Bike Hire
We suggest that whether or not you intend to rent a vehicle you bring
your driving licence. Corfu is such a beautiful island that it is a must
to explore the island and its beaches.
But here are some words of warning.
The roads are atrocious and are full of gravel, dust and potholes big
enough to catch the small wheels of a scooter, and the vehicles are often
insured 3rd party only, so you are not covered for damage to the vehicle.
You will see that most people still ride scooters without crash helmets,
even though the law now states that they must be worn. Should the police
stop you without a crash helmet, you will pick up an on-the-spot fine
of at least 80 Euro.
Many young tourists ride scooters around the resorts at night drunk,
often forgetting which side of the road they should be on and not understanding
the road signs (going the wrong way up one way streets etc.), and the
hospital is often full of scooter crash victims, some horrifically injured,
and there are usually 2 or 3 fatalities a year. You have been warned!
The law has recently changed in Greece such that to hire any scooter you
now require a valid license, and the conditions are much the same as in
the UK. With a full car licence you may ride a 50cc and carry a passenger
and with a provisional bike license only, you may ride up to 125cc but
not carry a passenger. If, on the other hand you have a full bike
licence, we strongly recommend you hire a trials-type bike such as Yamaha
DT, XT or TW which are far better suited to the roads.
Scooters are typically 12-20 euros a day, and larger bikes (250+cc) are
on a par with car hire.
